Among the many things that made news at this year’s Super Bowl, one highlight that piqued our interest was the reveal of country music legend Dolly Parton’s first-ever fragrance. Named ‘Dolly: Scent From Above’, the perfume made its debut in an advertisement set to the singer’s hit 9 to 5, which was broadcasted at the event. Presented in a lovely pink bottle, it will be officially launched in July. The singer is just one of the latest stars to release her own scent. Ariana Grande and Travis Scott launched new fragrances last year, and there have been other famous names who have forayed into the business of scents in the past decade. Many of these celebrities play important roles in creating products that reflect their style and personality. They participate in the scent-making process, packaging design, and name selection. Dolly Parton
The latest entrant to the world of celebrity fragrances, Dolly: Scent from Above was introduced to fans through a cameo in a commercial for Squarespace during the Super Bowl. The perfume comprises notes of mandarin, jasmine, pear and patchouli, and will be available in a rosy pink bottle with a crystal butterfly set on the cap. Parton has partnered with Edge Beauty to produce this fragrance which will be launched under her brand name. Though fans will only be able to buy the perfume from July 2021, a sample can be ordered on the official website for US$9.95.
Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande made her debut in the perfume business in 2015 with Ari — a floral, fruity fragrance with hints of pear, raspberry, vanilla orchid and musk. In 2018, she launched Cloud, described as an “uplifting scent that imbues a thoughtful, artistic expression of positivity and happiness.” It won Fragrance of the Year Women’s Popular and Consumer Choice (Germany), Women’s Popular honours at The Fragrance Foundation Awards 2019. Her other scents include Sweet Like Candy, Moonlight and thank u, next, which has a juicy fruit fragrance and comes in a rose pink bottle that looks like a broken heart. Grande added R.E.M. — a fragrance named after her single from the album Sweetener — to her range of perfumes in 2020. The scent, packaged in a crystal bottle, has been described as “an intergalactic dream of femininity and power” and contains notes of fig, salted caramel, marshmallow and tonka bean.

Travis Scott
When the American rapper released Space Rage Travx, a collection of eau de parfum and candles in November 2020, it sold out in three hours. Space Rage is produced in collaboration with Swedish luxury perfume maker Byredo. It is packaged in a blue gradient glass container that fades to purple at the bottom. The names of the collaborators and brand appear in a glow-in-the-dark phosphorescent text in Scott’s handwriting. Byredo describes its top notes as “cosmic dust” and “antimatter particles;” the heart notes as “starlight” and “the scent of supernova”, and base notes of “atmospheric vapour” and “dark nebulae.” Reviewers, however, say that the product has a fruity smell.

The nine-time Grammy Award winner and founder of Fenty Beauty debuted her first perfume Reb’l Fleur in 2010. This was followed by Rebelle and Nude in 2012. While Rebelle is a fruity-floral scent containing strong gourmand chords, Nude is a sweet fragrance with hints of vanilla. She released Rogue in 2013 and RiRi in 2015. To date, Rihanna has launched a total of 11 fragrances. Her latest, Reb’l Fleur Love Always, was introduced in 2018 as an update to the first perfume. The chypre fruity concoction has identical accords to its predecessor but has been described as richer and intense.

Lady Gaga
The acclaimed American singer and actress launched Fame at the world-famous Guggenheim Museum in New York, US, in 2012. This is the first ever black eau de parfum, which means that the perfume is black, but when sprayed the liquid turns clear and becomes invisible. Two years later, she launched her second perfume — Eau de Gaga. The unisex fragrance is floral with notes of wood and musk and opens with a burst of sparkling lime. Like Fame, it is produced by Gaga’s Haus Laboratories in association with American beauty company Coty, Inc.

Katy Perry
A best-selling musician, Katy Perry made her debut in the world of celebrity perfumes with Purr in 2010. It is packaged in a glass bottle in the shape of a cat with bejewelled eyes. She followed it up with Meow in 2011. Two years later, Perry introduced Killer Queen in association with perfumer Laurent Le Guernec of International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF). The fragrance is named after the song by legendary rock band Queen and comes in a bottle shaped like a spinning top. Mad Potion, Mad Love and INDI were the next to follow. Mad Love, which has fruity notes of apple sorbet and mara strawberry among others, comes in a bottle with a ball-shaped cap made of white marble.

David Beckham
The British football legend, who is also an international fashion icon, launched his first fragrance Instinct in 2005. Over the years, he has given us Intimately Beckham, Beyond, Classic, Homme, The Essence and Respect. Woody and spicy, his latest offering Bold Instinct (for men) was launched in 2020. The cologne has a blend of earthy, whisky-like notes with warming spices. It comes in a slightly opaque bottle lined with black lacquer.

Christina Aguilera
The award-winning singer has 11 fragrances to her name. She launched her first eponymous fragrance in 2007 following a deal with Procter & Gamble. The success of the product led to the release of Inspire, Royal Desire and Secret Potion over the years. Her collection today includes Violet Noir, Touch of Seduction, Woman and Red Sin. In 2019, Aguilera released her latest creation — Xperience. The floral scent consists notes of balsam, wood, frangipani and amber.
