A Grace Jones Album Cover Inspired the Beauty at Harris Reed’s London Fashion Week Show

The beauty look at Harris Reed’s fall 2022 show, which kicked off London Fashion Week on Thursday night, was an intoxicating mix of ’90s nude lips, ’80s eyeshadow and ’70s disco. In other words, it was beauty through the eras, which “never goes out of style,” says Terry Barber, director of makeup artistry at MAC and the mind behind the evening’s look.

“I decided to do the triangular highlight under the eyes, along the bridge of the nose and a ‘T’ across the forehead,” Barber shares of making up the models for the show. “The makeup on ’70s disco album covers—think Donna Summer, Diana Ross—brought into beauty the idea of using multiple foundation and concealer colors to shape, rather than using powders. It’s my favorite thing.”

Barber took Grace Jones’s Nightclubbing album cover in particular as inspiration for the ultra-glam and contoured faces. Playing with shades of black, Barber set out to up the ante on definition. Of course, Barber has worked with Jones in the past, so he knows a thing or two about the technique. For those wishing to recreate the look at home, the trick is to “blend—but don’t blend too much.”

Barber layered on MACStack Mascara to achieve lengthy lashes without a clump in sight. Lash extensions and a lick of jet-black liquid eyeliner completed the bewitching stares.
